What is Snapchat?

Snapchat is a way to share moments with friends. Snap a picture or a video, add a caption, and send it to a friend (or maybe a few). They'll receive it, laugh, and then the snap disappears after a few seconds. On the surface it sounds like a safe way to share photos, because they only go to the people you send them to, just long enough for those people to see them.

Things to be aware of...

  • The recipient can take a screenshot and save the photo, and either keep it, send it to someone else, or upload it to a website.

  • The sender is supposed to get a notification if a screenshot was taken, but there is a way for the recipient to bypass the notification

  • A copy of the photo remains in the file system of the phone even after it disappears. Anyone who knows how to retrieve files from the file system can save the photo and do whatever they want with it.

  • Students should go into the settings and make sure they are only allowing "friends" to snapchat them, and not "everyone".

  • Silly photos are not likely to cause an issue. However, talk to your child about the dangers of sending sexual or incriminating photos using Snapchat.
