What is Instagram?

Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr.

Things to be aware of...

  • The default privacy settings for Instagram are basically "public". Students should change their password settings to private.

  • Once the photo or video is shared on a service mentioned above, the privacy of that photo depends on the individual privacy settings the recipient is using on those services, potentially making the photo available to just about anyone.

  • There is a geotagging feature, which is turned off by default, but when turned on, will let viewers see exactly where your child is right now.

  • There is a comment section, which can be used as a conversation tool.  Child predators can use this feature to lure a child in.

  • Be careful not to send pictures and comments about being on vacation.  Viewers will know your house is empty.

  • Be aware that your child can easily view inappropriate pictures posted by other viewers.
